Microsoft actively urges IE 6 users to upgrade | Deep Tech - CNET News

Finally… In nearly all of my web or Ruby development work, I rarely have to consider Internet Explorer 6 as a browser “option.” IE 6 has been the bane of many a web developer’s existence, requiring special coding to “dumb down” much of a website’s cool layout and content tricks in order to display somewhat close to properly on that particular browser.

But, since IE6 is officially a component of Windows XP, and Windows XP support is guaranteed by Microsoft through April 2014. No, that is not a typo… 2014! Microsoft just had to go and incorporate the browser into the OS.

Unlike other browsers, IE makes no attempt to either update itself, or to suggest updates to the user. It amazes me that IE6 is still so – I really can’t bring myself to say “popular” – in use on the Internet. IE has the lion’s share of the browser market, and of that portion, IE6 has a fairly decent share. I cannot find any definitive breakdown of IE’s share into IE6, IE7 or IE8 in some casual searching at the moment.

Finally, Microsoft is actively urging IE6 users to upgrade. I recommend anyone tech-headed do the same within their circle of friends. Recommend at least IE8, if not Firefox or Google Chrome.
